Mixed Model Assembly has been part of the Toyota Production System for many years. However, there seems little appreciation of why the techniques is used or the benefits that may be derived from it.
They primary benefit is matches final output more closely to customer demand and simultaneously will smooth demand to upstream operations. This:

I recently presented a paper on this topic at the Assembly show in Chicago and will be doing a similar presentation at the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers in Philadelphia. Our expanded web pages on this topic expand on these presentations.
Long assembly lines, even mixed model lines, may not be the best way to achieve smooth production and steady demand. Cellular Manufacturing may be a better option. Our article discusses this as well.
